Reviewer: Deborah Lynn Bryan, SPT (Slippery Rock University)
Description: This book, written by Joachim E. Zuther, the founder and director of the Academy of Lymphatic Studies in Sebastian, Florida, examines the intricacies of lymphatic system anatomy and physiology, as well as the comprehensive nature of treatment of both primary and secondary lymphedema.
Purpose: This book provides a rather clear explanation of the lymphatic system and progresses to the treatment method of manual lymph drainage. The author not only strives to address physiology and treatment of the lymphatic system but also the clinical aspects of treatment. Sample forms are included for patients to complete.
Audience: The audience includes experienced clinicians who require a comprehensive reference for the complicated specialty of lymphedema treatment. The author provides extensive information about his credentials and reasons for penning this book.
Features: This book consists of six chapters that progress from anatomy and physiology to treatment to administration within the physical therapy clinic. Specific treatment methods include complete decongestive therapy with a brief history and manual lymph drainage. The chapters are written so that readers do not easily become confused with the intricate details of the lymphatic system. Color figures and photographs are valuable for readers who may not be familiar with certain presentations or treatments. Colored key boxes provide the reader with quick reference to key points. The tables serve as another valuable resource. A detailed glossary provides clarification and quick reference.
Assessment: This is a comprehensive reference on a subject that is sparsely researched. It serves as a valuable tool for clinicians whose practice includes patients with lymphedema or as a basis for therapists investigating this area of treatment. The lack of resources in this area led the author to write this book. The overall organization is easy to follow, although the organization of figures with numbered structures gets somewhat confusing as the key is written in paragraph form. The sample forms are rather useful for clinic usage. This book is a valuable resource for those clinicians who see patients with lymphedema. Clinicians can easily use this as a quick reference in the clinic or as a teaching tool. (Barbara Billek-Sawhney, PT, EdD, GCS, contributed to this review.)
