South Beach Heart Program or Fluent Bodies

South Beach Heart Program: The 4-Step Plan that Can Save Your Life

Author: Arthur Agatston

Over a million men and women in this country will suffer a heart attack this year. Another 600,000 will have a stroke. Doctors who practice aggressive prevention see another statistic entirely. Because the truth is, the great majority of these heart attacks and strokes can be prevented - right now, with medical knowledge we already possess. But instead of focusing on prevention, too many doctors and hospitals push for invasive procedures like bypasses that produce more income. In his most personal and passionate work, Dr. Arthur Agatston, who has helped millions of people find a healthy lifestyle, now hopes to champion a revolution in preventive medicine that will save lives. Drawing on nearly three decades as a practicing cardiologist, he outlines the key elements of his program:
Non-invasive imaging of the heart and blood vessels

Advanced blood testing

A regimen of diet, exercise, and medication

Repeat testing to assure the patient and physician that the treatment is working

Dr. Agatston has watched his patients thrive as a result of his prevention strategy. With expert advice from an expert they have learned to trust, the American public can join his Prevention Revolution and take the necessary steps to live healthier and longer.

Fluent Bodies: Ayurvedic Remedies for Postcolonial Imbalance

Author: Jean M Langford

Fluent Bodies examines the modernization of the indigenous healing practice Ayurveda in India. Combining contemporary ethnography with a study of key historical moments as glimpsed through early-twentieth-century texts, Jean M. Langford argues that as Ayurveda evolved from an eclectic set of healing practices into a sign of Indian national culture, it was reimagined as a healing force not simply for bodily disorders but for colonial and postcolonial ills.

Interweaving theory with narrative, Langford explores the strategies of contemporary practitioners who reconfigure Ayurvedic knowledge through institutions and technologies such as hospitals, anatomy labs, clinical trials, and sonograms. She shows how practitioners appropriate, transform, or circumvent the knowledge practices implicit in these institutions and technologies, destabilizing such categories as medicine, culture, science, symptom, and self, even as they deploy them in clinical practice. Ultimately, this study points to the future of Ayurveda in a transnational era as a remedy not only for the wounds of colonialism but also for an imagined cultural emptiness at the heart of global modernity.

What People Are Saying

Vincanne Adams
This rich study incorporates a wide range of contemporary and historical materials to make wonderful theoretical interventions into the literature on Ayurveda and India. Langford pulls the reader into a new understanding of the nuanced relationships between history, nation, modernity, clinical debate, and the practices of Ayurveda.

Lawrence Cohen
This is an important, ethnographically compelling work. Langford's insights will substantially change the field of studying Ayurveda.

Fearless: The Complete Personal Safety Guide for Women

Author: Paul Henry Danylewich

"Fearless: The Complete Personal Safety Guide for Women" is an extensive manual that offers a unique balance of practical advice on personal safety and an array of self-defence strategies, with an academic exploration of the psychology of offenders and victims. While presenting the reader with detailed self-defence material, including strategies for safety awareness and effective physical and non-physical resistance techniques, Paul Henry Danylewich investigates the social patterns of sexual assault and domestic violence using the material from interviews with 50 sex offenders, as well as the resources provided by law enforcement agencies, rape crisis centres, hospitals, and public safety organizations in North America.

Written by the director of White Tiger Street Defense, a group specializing in safety issues for women, "Fearless" offers clear instruction on physical and non-physical self-defence strategies. The two principles guiding this manual are that women in general are not conditioned or socialized adequately to defend themselves in threatening situations, and, more generally, that knowledge is power. Danylewich offers prevention tips to reduce the individual's chances of becoming the target of an aggressor and debunks myths surrounding sexual assault. He describes in detail the techniques for reducing the likelihood of being victimized in various circumstances, including: dating relationships and parties, while driving alone, working late, walking alone, taking public transit, and at home when answering the phone or the front door. To help women learn these easy and effective techniques, the guide is packed with over 140 action photo illustrations.

"Fearless" contains information every woman should have to help her live more safely and with less fear. This guide is a complete personal safety manual that can empower women with the resources necessary to help recognise and avoid potentially violent situations.

AA to Z or Steps of Transformation

AA to Z: An Addictionary of the 12-Step Culture

Author: Christopher Cavanaugh

AA to Z is the first book to document the richness and diversity of the lives of recovering people and to provide an encyclopedic look at this unique subculture. Less self-help than enlightenment and entertainment, AA to Z is comprised of real-life stories of recovering addicts as well as an "addictionary" of recovery terminology. Everything from the well-known slogan "One Day at a Time" to more esoteric terms like "pigeon" (a lovingly insulting term for a newcomer to the program) and "Wharf Rats" (sober Deadheads) is explained with clarity, insight, and humor. Conversational, witty, and engaging, AA to Z is a must-have for all 12-step participants and their loved ones, and it offers the uninitiated a fascinating firsthand look at one of the most influential yet least-documented cultural movements of our time.

Library Journal

AA to Z is a reader-friendly paperback chock full of useful information for new Alcoholics Anonymous participants, students of 12-step programs, and the general reader curious to know how such programs operate. Cavanaugh, managing editor for Reader's Digest General Books, presents a brief overview of AA's beginnings, its connection to the Oxford movement, and its enduring steps to sobriety. "Through the years," Cavanaugh states, "the people who live a 12-step life have formed a unique culture, with a language, history, and set of customs all its own. This book attempts to document that culture." Introductory comments are followed by "Jack's Story," a prototype of addiction and recovery, as well as an alphabetic "addictionary" of AA jargon. In A Sponsorship Guide, which is set up in interview format, a group of 17 active, experienced sponsors, primarily from New York City and the West Coast, comment on issues such as same-sex sponsorship, the place of friendship in a sponsor/sponsee relationship, gay sponsorship, and qualities of a good sponsor. Each of the 12 steps is discussed, as well as various methods for working them with sponsees. Readers are assured that there are many ways to be an effective sponsor and that no one path to success exists. Included are a suggested reading list and step worksheets. Although the author remains anonymous, she reveals that she is a Los Angeles screenwriter and director.Catherine T. Charvat, John Marshall Lib., Alexandria, Va.

Arthritis Survival: The Holistic Medical Treatment Program for Osteoarthritis

Author: Robert S Ivker

The only arthritis guide you'll ever need-from the author of the landmark health classic Sinus Survival.

Arthritis can be healed. But the healing will not arise from adopting a single miracle treatment or taking a magical herb or pill. Living successfully with arthritis can be achieved by the simple, committed lifestyle changes and combination of healthful natural and traditional treatments explored in easy-to-understand detail in Robert S. Ivker's Arthritis Survival.

The twenty-one million Americans who suffer from osteoarthritis are often also suffering from unhealthy nutritional, physical, and even emotional lifestyles. Yet too frequently they are told simply to reach into their medicine cabinet for a cure. While conventional medicine plays an invaluable role in alleviating the symptoms of this disease, the Arthritis Survival program will help readers truly relieve their pain and replace it with a feeling of wellness and hope.

In meticulous and easily understood detail, Arthritis Survival begins with a "quick fix" guide that outlines the herbs, vitamins, and other substances that can begin to relieve pain right away. Dr. Ivker then lays out a program of lifestyle changes-from exercise, to eating choices, to emotional factors-that will help readers to gain mastery over arthritis. He provides specific recipes for healthful eating, a wellness self-test, and an extensive guide to resources that will allow readers to further shape their own arthritis survival program. Resource guide. Index.

Author Biography: Robert S. Ivker, D.O., is an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Family Medicine and a clinical instructor in the Department of Otolaryngology at the University of Colorado School of Medicine in Denver, and past president of the American Holistic Medical Association. Todd H. Nelson, N.D., is a widely recognized naturopathic physician and the director of the Tree of Life Wellness Center in Colorado.

Library Journal

Here are two new titles offering natural or holistic approaches to the treatment of arthritis. Alternative health writer Brown (Nature's Pharmacy) uses her research and her own bout with arthritis and fibromyalgia to argue that arthritis can be reversed. Her theory is that joint disease is caused by poor nutrition, the build-up of toxins in joints, stress, and energy blockage. Brown describes how she rejected conventional medicine's treatment anti-inflammatory medications, cortisone, and surgery and instead, after some research, began a trial-and-error, self-treating "eclectic protocol" that included fasting, detoxification with niacin, supplements, clay packs, diet, yoga, and relaxation. She provides detailed chapters on these and other therapies such as homeopathy, acupuncture, and copper bracelets for gout, arthritis, and the soft-tissue rheumatic diseases. Brown also lists over 23 pages of references to papers and books on both conventional and alternative medicine. Much of the information Brown offers is not new, and some of it is incorrect or flawed by her interpretation. For instance, she describes fibromyalgia as an autoimmune disease, but the American College of Rheumatology does not classify it as autoimmune or inflammatory in nature. Furthermore, by her own admission, she developed a plan by trial and error that worked for reasons she cannot pinpoint. Not an essential purchase. Ivker, a clinical professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine, past president of the American Holistic Medical Association, and alternative health author (Self-Care Guide to Holistic Medicine) joined with naturopath Nelson to develop a holistic self-care program, the "Arthritis Survival Program," that offers "therapeutic options for treating, preventing, and possibly curing osteoarthritis." In a clear and readable style, the first chapter, "The Quick Fix," outlines the essentials of the program and describes herbs and vitamins that can relieve arthritis pain immediately. With Chapter 4, the book goes into the details of the program, addressing the multiple causes of arthritis (unhealthy diet and nutrition, poor sleep, stress, inactivity, environmental causes, negative beliefs and attitudes, etc.). True to their holistic approach, the authors offer chapters dedicated to "Healing Your Body," "Healing Your Mind," and "Healing Your Spirit." These chapters and the worksheets for symptoms, advice on supplements, a Wellness Self-Test, menus, and recipes reinforce the concise information found in Chapter 1. The authors are not reluctant to suggest that there are times when conventional or alternative professional practitioners need to be consulted for care and assistance in safely and effectively using some therapies. These two books handle the healing process similarly, but Ivker and Nelson's training and credentials make them more qualified to interpret and apply available evidence. In the Beat of a Heart or Can I Still Kiss You

In the Beat of a Heart: Life, Energy, and the Unity of Nature

Author: John Humphreys Whitfield

"Visionary biologists have advanced a new theory that explains how all the living creatures of the world - from the tiny amoeba to the vast rain forest - are constructed, providing a fresh perspective on the essential interconnectivity of living systems." "This revolutionary theory explains a variety of phenomena, helping us understand why a shrew eats its bodyweight in food each day, why a mammal's heart beats about 1 billion times in its lifetime, why there are no trees as tall as the Eiffel Tower, and why more species live at the Earth's equator than at its poles. By looking at how living things use energy, we can answer these and a myriad of other intriguing questions." In the Beat of a Heart combines biography, history and science, and nature writing to capture the exciting advances - and the people who are making them - that are triggering a revolution as potentially important to biology as Newton's insights were to physics.

Library Journal

Why are there 700 species of North American birds instead of seven? Why do the tropics have more species than the polar regions? If different species-whether tree, bear, or bacterium-are subject to the same physical laws, is there a general unified theory of biology? Freelance science writer Whitfield tackles these questions by exploring the role of energy and metabolism as the unifying force in nature. Writing in an engaging style, he describes the work and lives of key scientists whose often controversial ideas also help contribute answers. While similar to Kevin J. Gaston and Tim M. Blackburn's Pattern and Process in Macroecology, which is suitable for a more academic audience, Whitfield's book does not overwhelm the reader with innumerable scientific studies and details. Instead, it gives a glimpse of the history and science behind the search for a new theory explaining the simplicity and complexity of life. Recommended for all libraries.-Teresa U. Can I Still Kiss You?: Answering Your Children's Questions About Cancer

Author: Neil Russell

As a successful, loving father, Neil Russell had to deal with one of the mostdifficult and important responsibilities he had ever faced as a parent: speaking to his children about his cancer. Diagnosed at age 47 when his children were only 11 and 13, this is Neil's emotional account of the disease's life-changing impact on himself and his family. Can I Still Kiss You? is both informative narrative and interactive journal; it will help parents speak to their children about the cancer that has come into their lives.

The prospect of sitting down with a child in an attempt to make sense out of a disease that we barely understand ourselves is daunting. Russell provides a chapter-by-chapter series of questions and answers dealing with diagnosis, surgery, radiation and chemotherapy during and after treatment. Through his own experience and research he presents clear, straightforward questions followed by answers that are understandable to children. Additional space encourages parents to add personal responses to children and children to write back expressing fears, concerns or encouragement-in essence, a "message board" for sharing emotions that are difficult to articulate. Some of the questions he addresses are: What is cancer?, When I get older will I get cancer because you did?, and Can I still kiss you?

This insightful book ends with a warm and powerful essay written by Neil's son, Trevor. Can I Still Kiss You? reveals the remarkable inner strength and courage of a family dealing with a parent in need.

Help Your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder

Author: James Lock

Always harmful and potentially deadly, eating disorders can wreak havoc on families. Unfortunately, the same can often be said of their treatment: blaming parents for the illness, many eating disorder programs exclude parents and widen the rift in an already shattered family. This powerful and controversial book by top researchers James Lock and Daniel le Grange argues that parents are not the culprits but the key to their teen's recovery. Based on new research, Help Your Teenager Beat an Eating Disorder shows how parents can break the disorder's control over their child's mind and re-establish normal eating and family relations. The odds for full recovery drop precipitously if treatment is delayed. A radically important wake up call, this book urges parents to act now.

Doody Review Services

Reviewer: Tammy Yuen, MD (Rush University Medical Center)
Description: This book on adolescent eating disorders is geared towards parents and families to help them better deal with a very difficult condition.
Purpose: The purpose is to help parents understand and deal with a teenager's eating disorder on many levels. The objectives set out by the authors are very worthwhile and are easily met within the context of the book.
Audience: The intended audience is parents, but there likely is some value for pediatricians and school workers as well. The authors are quite credible and knowledgeable on the topic.
Features: The book does an excellent job at helping parents to identify, understand, and work with treatment of eating disorders. A particularly nice feature is the inclusion of examples of various presentations of teenagers with eating disorders at various stages of the disease. The book has references of other helpful materials or books at the end of each chapter. In addition, at the end of the book there are many valuable resources to help families. It is particularly nice that the issue of how families can work with healthcare professionals is addressed.
Assessment: The book is of high quality and would be of help to any family facing this difficult situation.

Lyme Disease or Change One

Lyme Disease: The Cause, the Cure, the Controversy

Author: Alan G Barbour

Lyme disease is one of the least understood of the new diseases--and one of the most dreaded. Because undiagnosed or untreated Lyme disease can pose serious health threats, people who develop symptoms such as joint pain and tiredness worry that they may have chronic Lyme disease. Even people with confirmed acute Lyme disease worry that the treatment they're getting won't cure the disease and that it may reappear later in a more debilitating form. These fears are made worse by the well-publicized uncertainties surrounding diagnosis and treatment of the disease.

In this book, noted Lyme disease researcher and clinician Alan Barbour presents a comprehensive and even-handed discussion of what we know about the disease and offers medical science's current thinking about its more controversial aspects. Throughout the book, Dr. Barbour uses the stories of four "patients" to illustrate the varying course of the disease in different individuals and under different circumstances. A fifth "patient" stands as the model for people who, in the absence of a clear diagnosis, remain convinced that Lyme disease explains their symptoms--and as a result suffer for too long without appropriate treatment for what's really ailing them.

Including illustrations of ticks and the rashes caused by their bites, as well as maps showing the worldwide distribution of Lyme disease and the relative risk of the disease across the United States, the book offers a wealth of useful information for patients, family members and caregivers, and those who live, work, and play in high-risk areas:

Explains how Lyme disease is spread, and who is at risk Describes the symptoms and consequences of Lymedisease, from the rash following a tick bite to the most serious complications, such as infection of the nervous system, joints, and heart Describes all the diagnostic tests for Lyme disease and explains what the test results mean Compares Lyme disease with other conditions, such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, and explains why they are often mistaken for Lyme disease Presents a compassionate and convincing discussion of depression, which is often the correct diagnosis for a patient who clings to a diagnosis of Lyme disease despite repeated negative diagnostic tests Carefully explains proven and unproven treatments, and summarizes the debates about antibiotic and other treatments Outlines what individuals can do to avoid getting Lyme disease as well as what the community can do to reduce the number of Lyme-carrying ticks

Here at last is an intelligent and interesting guide for patients, as well as an insider's tour of medical science. The author includes an explanation of how the Borrelia burgdorferi bacterium was discovered in the laboratory and how it was first connected with the disease, a fascinating account of modern medical detective work.

Library Journal

Although Lyme disease is named for a town in Connecticut, the first recorded case occurred in Europe at the turn of the century. The incidence has been rising since the 1970s, due partially to increased awareness and partially to the fact that it is a fashionable diagnosis for unexplained symptoms. This book by a physician doing research on the disease is an objective, comprehensive, up-to-date source that explains the epidemiology, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease using case histories to illustrate the symptoms and problems associated with it. Barbour shows how antibiotics and laboratory tests work and why they are not always useful and/or accurate. He discusses the differing opinions about chronic Lyme disease and other conditions such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome that have similar symptoms. He tells us why this disease is not a major public health threat (it's confined to certain areas and victims have to be bitten by an infected tick) and offers advice on preventing it. Illustrations of ticks and rashes, maps showing the worldwide distribution of Lyme Disease, and a list of American and international agencies complete the text. While Polly Murray's The Widening Circle (LJ 2/15/96) offers a personal and historical perspective on Lyme, this book is full of current scientific information. Highly recommended for all health collections.Barbara M. Bibel, Oakland P.L., Cal.

Including illustrations of ticks and the rashes caused by their bites, as well as maps showing the worldwide distribution of Lyme disease and the relative risk of the disease across the United States, the book explains how Lyme disease is spread, and who is at risk; describes the symptoms and consequences of Lyme disease, from the rash following a tick bite to the most serious complications, such as infection of the nervous system, joints, and heart; describes all the diagnostic tests for Lyme disease and explains what the test results mean; compares Lyme disease with other conditions, such as fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue syndrome, and explains why they are often mistaken for Lyme disease; presents a compassionate and convincing discussion of depression, which is often the correct diagnosis for a patient who clings to a diagnosis of Lyme disease despite repeated negative diagnostic tests; carefully explains proven and unproven treatments, and summarizes the debates about antibiotics and other treatments; and outlines what individuals can do to avoid getting Lyme disease as well as what the community can do to reduce the number of Lyme-disease-carrying ticks.

Out of This World: A Journey of Healing

Author: Mary Swander

When a life-threatening allergic illness demanded that she eat only organically grown food, writer and professor Mary Swander built a new life in a former one-room Iowa schoolhouse in the middle of the largest Amish community west of the Mississippi. In this rich and engaging memoir, which follows the course of a farmer's year, she writes from the well-named Fairview School to share the radical transformation of her life.

From her perch in rural Kalona, Iowa, Swander discovers new strength and self-reliance along with a community of hardworking and hospitable neighbors. Raising goats and poultry, participating in barn raisings and auctions, protecting her garden from a plague of grasshoppers, creating a living crèche at Christmastime, all the while laughing at her attempts to wrestle with the pioneer challenges of midwestern winters and summers, she explores what it means to be a lone physical and spiritual homesteader at the end of the twentieth century.

A Woman's Guide to Living with HIV Infection

Author: Rebecca A Clark

Written by three experts with extensive experience helping people with HIV/AIDS, A Woman's Guide to Living with HIV Infection is a medically informational, comprehensive, and deeply compassionate resource for women with HIV and their families and friends. While addressing the entire range of health and emotional issues faced by people with HIV, the authors cover topics of special interest to women -- gynecologic disorders, reproductive choices, contraception, and pregnancy.

The authors offer clear advice on these and other crucial topics:

•Testing for HIV and coping with the diagnosis•Finding a physician and preparing for the first visit•Recognizing symptoms and preventing complications•Understanding the latest treatment options, including new medical research and clinical trials•Coping with gynecological infections and STDs•Considering pregnancy and birth control•Assuring breast, bone, and heart health•Treating drug and alcohol dependence•Dealing with partner violence and abuse

Also included are lists of recommended books, support groups, Web sites, and other resources for people with HIV. The practical advice in this book can help the thousands of women diagnosed with HIV every year lead to fuller and healthier lives.

Library Journal

Every year thousands of American women are diagnosed with HIV. Currently, a quarter of the 850,000 to 950,000 Americans with HIV or AIDS are women. Internist Clark, obstetrician/gynecologist Robert Maupin, and psychologist Jill Hayes Hammer merge their expert perspectives on living with HIV to produce a comprehensive, practical, yet consultable and reassuring guide. They address a multitude of topics in great detail that relate specifically to women with HIV/AIDS: adjusting to life with HIV; treating symptoms, complications, and the virus itself; sexual, contraceptive, and reproductive issues; and a variety of important related subjects. Appendix 1 is a sample tracking sheet for medications, tests, and vaccinations, and Appendix 2 lists resources for people with HIV. An excellent glossary is also provided. Although other books (e.g., Patricia A. Lather's Troubling the Angels; Dorie J. Gilbert and Ednita M. Wright's African American Women and HIV/AIDS: Critical Responses) address the issue of women and HIV/AIDS, most offer a sociopolitical perspective and are rather old. This is the most complete and up-to-date consumer guide available. Strongly recommended for all consumer health and most health sciences libraries.-Linda M.G. Katz, Drexel Univ. Is Our Food Safe?: A Consumer's Guide to Protecting Your Health and the Environment

Author: Warren Leon

Every day, new warnings emerge about the safety of the food in our markets, school cafeterias, and restaurants. As industry and government officials rush in with reassurances—and food alarmists call for drastic changes in the American diet—ordinary consumers are caught in the middle. Is Our Food Safe? separates the facts from the rumors and offers straightforward, reliable advice on how to protect your health and the environment without going to extremes.

Is Our Food Safe? answers common questions about the safety of meat, dairy products, fish, fruits, and other foods that make up our daily diet. It assesses the positive and negative aspects of genetically engineered foods, compares organic and conventionally produced foods, and makes recommendations about when (and if) you should choose local suppliers over industry giants. It also explains which foods to eat and which to avoid if you are concerned about clean water and air and a safe environment. Finally, it provides valuable information on how you can improve the quality of the food available in your communities, including specific issues to raise with grocers and food service providers.

Library Journal

This guide presents the facts and myths about the safety of meat, dairy, seafood, breads, pastas, fruits, vegetables, water, and other food products, whether conventional, organic, or genetically engineered, that we consume daily. Leon, executive director of the Northeast Sustainable Energy Association, and DeWaal, director of the Food Safety Program at the Center for Science in the Public Interest, a food industry watchdog organization, give commonsense advice on protecting oneself against illnesses caused by contaminated or spoiled food. Focusing on three issues food safety and food-borne illnesses, environmental aspects of food choices, and sound diet and nutrition the book describes the symptoms of food-borne illnesses, the dangers of exposure to bacteria, toxins, chemicals, waste products, pesticides, and other contaminants, and the way these contaminants get into our food supply. The text also explains how to avoid food hazards, what to look for when shopping, and how to cook and prepare food that's free of contaminants. Naturally occurring substances may put consumers at risk as well; to find out more, read James P. Collman's Naturally Dangerous: Surprising Facts About Food, Health, and the Environment. For basic information on food contaminants, this book is solid and well crafted. Irwin Weintraub, Brooklyn Coll. Lib., NY Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.

Physical Activity and Type 2 Diabetes or Prozac and the New Antidepressants

Physical Activity and Type 2 Diabetes: Therapeutic Effects and Mechanisms of Action

Author: John Hawley

Over the past 50 years, there has been a dramatic increase in the prevalence of interrelated metabolic disease states, including obesity, insulin resistance, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. In modern Western nations, the population-based prevalence of insulin resistance is approaching 20%, and type 2 diabetes is now the most common endocrine disorder in adults. No longer a disease reserved for the aging population, type 2 diabetes is also on the rise in adolescents. Approximately 30% of all newly diagnosed cases (between 1982 and 1994 in the United States alone) are among people 10 to 19 years of age.

For those engaged in a struggle against this modern-day epidemic, Physical Activity and Type 2 Diabetes provides cutting-edge research to energize current efforts in diabetes prevention, management, and treatment. The most in-depth and up-to-date book on the topic, Physical Activity and Type 2 Diabetes presents a series of independent but related chapters authored by the foremost researchers of insulin resistance examining topics such as these:

•Physical inactivity as a primary cause for the rising incidence of insulin resistance
•The emergence of an "exercise-deficient" phenotype
•The effects of exercise training on selected aspects of substrate metabolism
•The role of endurance and resistance training programs for the prevention and treatment of insulin resistance
•The identification of new molecular targets and pathways useful for the treatment of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

Physical Activity and Type 2 Diabetes provides a four-part, in-depth examination of the relational nature of diabetes andphysical activity. Part I begins with a description of the scope and extent of the "diabesity" epidemic. The risk factors for diabetes, the underlying causes of the epidemic, and its potential consequences are outlined as well as the role of physical inactivity in the pathogenesis of diabetes and plans for preventive exercise biology.
Part II continues with an examination of some of the major defects of substrate metabolism in individuals with insulin resistance, while in part III the authors discuss the impact of exercise interventions in the prevention, management, and treatment of type 2 diabetes. Part IV presents recent developments in molecular and cellular biology that may provide treatment therapies for the prevention of type 2 diabetes.

Based on extensive research, Physical Activity and Type 2 Diabetes presents a wealth of information to assist the biomedical and research community in creating prescriptive therapeutic tools for type 2 diabetes intervention-and offers hope for the alleviation of the global epidemic of insulin resistance.

Dying to Quit or Community Mobility

Dying to Quit: Why We Smoke and How We Stop

Author: Janet Brigham

Someone dies of a tobacco-related disease, somewhere in the world, every 10 seconds. Why do so many of us - one in every three persons worldwide - smoke? And what can science tell us about how we can stop? This book follows the smoking-life of a young woman hoping to quit, and explores the myths and mysteries of addiction.

Publishers Weekly

Although seemingly writing for clinicians, Brigham, a research psychologist with a California think tank, has much to tell general readers about smoking. Is it an addiction or a habit? Studies are inconclusive, we learn here. But much is known, such as the connection between mood and tobacco use: nicotine, a mild euphoriant, provides "quick relief" to anxiety. With some 16 million smokers trying to quit every year, just 1.2 million succeed, according to studies quoted in this well-documented book. Brigham notes factors involved in avoiding relapse, such as a support network, low stress and a stable life. She explains that although the experience of withdrawal differs from individual to individual, among the constants is weight gain, an average 8-10 pounds but up to 30 pounds for some. The book also reviews the medical hazards of smoking, among them circulatory, coronary and lung diseases, and cancer of the esophagus. Brigham's material is all the more terrifying for its calm delivery. And only after motivating readers with so much alarming information does she discuss quitting techniques, noting that cessation usually requires many attempts and is more successfully accomplished with aids like nicotine replacements (patch or gum) or counseling lasting eight or more weeks. 20,000 first printing. (July)

Library Journal

Tobacco researcher and psychologist Brigham examines the complex effects of addiction and usage in this fascinating account of tobacco history and research. Interviews regarding one young woman's personal smoking experience lead each chapter into the scientific story of nicotine's effects on the mind and body as an addictive agent, appetite suppressant, emotional stabilizer, and toxic polluter. Tobacco usage and research, company sales strategies, social and peer pressures, and smoking-cessation products are all investigated, and Bingham presents staggering statistics on the number of people worldwide addicted to tobacco. Her impressive, fascinating volume, similar in scope to Simon Bryant's Know Smoking (Middle Way, 1997) but more scholarly and in-depth, will prove valuable to any person researching this subject. Highly recommended.Janet M. Schneider, James A. Haley Veterans' Hosp., Tampa, FL

Kirkus Reviews

A useful overview of the science and sociology surrounding the smoking debate. Former science journalist Brigham, now a research psychologist, observes that where smoking had been declining in the US since the surgeon generalþs 1963 report on smoking and cancer, the number of smokers has now begun to climb; Hollywood, she says, glamorizes smoking (65 percent of male leads in recent films are depicted as smokers), cigars are in, and teenagers are lighting up in record numbers. At the same time, the number of smokers worldwide is growing (as is, of course, the worldþs population); it now stands at more than a billion, a cigarette manufacturerþs dream come true. American smokers are likelier, she writes, to live in the industrial northeast than in California or Hawaii, where the rates of smoking are lowest; they are likelier as well to be uneducated, and the less educated they are, the less probable it is that they will quit smoking. Brighamþs text becomes occasionally tangled when she departs from mere numerical observations—but only because the science surrounding smoking is itself confused and confusing. Brigham notes that nicotine and other active ingredients in tobacco affect different smokers in different ways, that some smokers can puff away for seven or eight decades without becoming ill, while others are felled by coronary disease in early middle age, and that nicotine offers powerful therapeutic value in combating such maladies as Alzheimerþs disease while posing undeniable health risks in other areas. Her text is straightforward, if sometimes marred by a too anecdotal approach, and she makes a good case—as if one were needed—for whythose who smoke should stop and those who do not smoke should not start. Good reading for high-school health classes and for anti-smoking activists.

Contraception: Your Questions Answered

Author: John Guillebaud

Contraception: Your Questions Answered is the established primary source of information about reversible methods of contraception. Presented in an informal - and yet highly informative - question-and-answer style, it represents a dialogue between general practitioner (asking the questions) and reproductive health specialist (providing the answers). The main aim of the book is to give practical guidance to busy clinicians when they are faced with patients who want help with choosing the best means of controlling fertility. Most chapters conclude with questions frequently asked by patients - the answers to which can be very difficult for the unprepared and busy clinician to improvise 'on the spot' in the surgery.

Written by contraception expert Professor John Guillebaud, this book is an invaluable resource for GPs, family planning doctors and nurses, trainee and consultant gynaecologists, medical students and the interested general reader.

  • Popular question and answer format.

  • Practical focus.
  • Detailed consideration of reversible birth control technology.

Culture of Public Problems or Harvard Medical School Guide to Lowering Your Cholesterol

Culture of Public Problems: Drinking-Driving and the Symbolic Order

Author: Joseph R Gusfield

"Everyone knows 'drunk driving' is a 'serious' offense. And yet, everyone knows lots of 'drunk drivers' who don't get involved in accidents, don't get caught by the police, and manage to compensate adequately for their 'drunken disability.' Everyone also knows of 'drunk drivers' who have been arrested and gotten off easy. Gusfield's book dissects the conventional wisdom about 'drinking-driving' and examines the paradox of a 'serious' offense that is usually treated lightly by the judiciary and rarely carries social stigma."—Mac Marshall, Social Science and Medicine
"A sophisticated and thoughtful critic. . . . Gusfield argues that the 'myth of the killer drunk' is a creation of the 'public culture of law.' . . . Through its dramatic development and condemnation of the anti-social character of the drinking-driver, the public law strengthens the illusion of moral consensus in American society and celebrates the virtues of a sober and orderly world."—James D. Orcutt, Sociology and Social Research
"Joseph Gusfield denies neither the role of alcohol in highway accidents nor the need to do something about it. His point is that the research we conduct on drinking-driving and the laws we make to inhibit it tells us more about our moral order than about the effects of drinking-driving itself. Many will object to this conclusion, but none can ignore it. Indeed, the book will put many scientific and legal experts on the defensive as they face Gusfield's massive erudition, pointed analysis and criticism, and powerful argumentation. In The Culture of Public Problems, Gusfield presents the experts, and us, with a masterpiece of sociological reasoning."—BarrySchwartz, American Journal of Sociology
This book is truly an outstanding achievement. . . . It is sociology of science, sociology of law, sociology of deviance, and sociology of knowledge. Sociologists generally should find the book of great theoretical interest, and it should stimulate personal reflection on their assumptions about science and the kind of consciousness it creates. They will also find that the book is a delight to read."—William B. Bankston, Social Forces

Heads or Beauty Feng Shui

Heads

Author: Alex Kayser

Unmasked and stripped of makeup and hairdos, what do the human face and head tell us? This striking book provides the answers.

A hat designer, Punk musician, sculptor, fireman, professional rent-a-Buddha, heavyweight boxer, peace movement worker, gourmet chef, United Nations official, dog trainer, chiropractor, sanitation worker, Marine Corps pilot, tire retreader-these and many more: 184 men and women with only one thing in common. They are bald. Unmasked, void of make-up and shorn of hair, stripped of civilized disguise, what does a human face say? And how does it make us feel? Avant-garde photographer Alex Kayser launches us on an odyssey into the emotionally charged topography of the human countenance. Kayser shares the story of his work in a delightfully candid conversation, and National Book Award winner Richard Howard provides a brilliant and provocative afterword.

did you decide, then, who was going to be in the book?

AK: This was simply a mathematical decision, and not an aesthetic or even personal one. It was hard, though, since these pictures are all the same in any of their qualities. I felt like I wanted to pick and choose with closed eyes.

LM: But, as an artist and photographer, didn't you get bored doing the same kind of shot over and over again?

AK: One would think so, but I could still do more. Originally, I had planned to do a series of twelve, maybe twenty heads. But then the response I got from people, their suggestions and introductions, was so overwhelming that I just went on with it. Also, since I was making groups out of the individual pictures, I would always need another particular face to match the one of Duane, Bill, or Annie. Or I was waiting for another black guy with a big beard. Each of the models brought his or her own aura into the picture. So, somehow, when I put the groups together, these different auras became like different colors when you paint or different spices when you cook. Depending on how they are put together, each group turns out to have a very specific feeling of its own. I went on and on. Even when this work started to become routine—and the shooting itself took only ten minutes—meeting with this incredible variety of people remained enormously interesting. Some days you had to be up very early to receive a Wall Street broker at 8 a.m. So, over a small breakfast, you would hear some news from the stock market. Then at 9 a.m. you would shoot this yoga teacher, who has to be out by 10, because he is teaching an 11:30 class at Riker's Island prison. At 3 p.m. a rock musician would show up, playing you a cassette of his group's latest concert, commenting on his work. At 4 you would have an inspector from the New York City Health Department, a man who inspects hospitals. He is very kind and modest and at first does not quite know why I would ask him to model for me. Then at 5 p.m. the actor Harve Presnell, already with some make-up on for tonight's show (or for me?), would tell me about what it was like playing Daddy Warbucks in Broadway's Annie 1,600 times. . . .

• By the author of Body Feng Shui.

Many people are now familiar with the use of feng shui to design living spaces that harmonize with the landscape and that enhance the positive aspects of one's life. Few people know, however, that these same feng shui principles can be applied to the human body to chart the relationship between inner character and outer appearance. Focusing on the special needs of women, Beauty Feng Shui explains the spiritual and physical meaning of each part of the body according to min xiang shue--body feng shui--and provides exercises and meditations to restore harmony to those areas compromised by energy imbalances. A wide spectrum of specific beauty and health concerns is addressed, including acne, menstrual cramps, wrinkles, and overly dry or oily skin.

But beauty is not only skin deep. Chao-Hsiu Chen also discusses inner beauty and how to strengthen it through meditation, visualization, and imagination. She includes daily exercises that allow the reader to deepen self-awareness, alter destructive behavior patterns, and create an effective spiritual practice. More than one hundred illustrations show these exercises and special Chinese characters for use in meditation and visualization.

Secrets of Good Carb Low Carb Living or Treasures and Pleasures of India

Secrets of Good-Carb Low- Carb Living

Author: Sandra Woodruff

From the top-selling author of The Good Carb Cookbook comes a comprehensive and motivating guide to the good-carb lifestyle.

Lately, low-carb diets have been all the rage, but until recently little scientific research has been available regarding their effectiveness and potential health consequences. Now, studies are proving that low-carb diets do work and, contrary to popular belief, they don't pose health risks-if they are done right. But with so many diets to choose from, it is hard for many people to find a program that is realistic for their lifestyle and to which they can adhere.

Nationally recognized nutritionist Sandra Woodruff demystifies the process and explains how anyone can tailor a low-carb plan to their individual needs to achieve long-term weight loss. She provides hundreds of delicious recipes, innovative menu plans, instructive cooking tips, and helpful advice for eating out. The healthy eating plan in Secrets of Good-Carb/Low-Carb Living includes lean proteins, healthy fats, and good carbs to not only lose weight but also to lower blood sugar and cholesterol levels and help correct metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. Now anyone can get better results from their low-carb diet or formulate a new eating plan specifically for their needs. With Sandra Woodruff, low-carb living never tasted so good!

Author Biography: Sandra Woodruff, M.S., R.D., is the author of several top-selling books, including The Complete Diabetes Prevention Plan, Secrets of Fat-Free Cooking, Diabetic Dream Desserts, and The Good Carb Cookbook.

Publishers Weekly

Woodruff (The Good Carb Cookbook; etc.) is a dietician and nutritionist who eschews the Atkins diet's controversial no-carbohydrate, high-fat, no-exercise-necessary diet for a healthier, more sustainable approach to keeping carbs in check. Urging readers to avoid refined sugars and flours, she suggests sensible portions of lean proteins, moderate whole grains, lots of vegetables and allows Atkins-forbidden but nutritious fruit, stressing the importance of exercise. She explains the benefits of low-carb diets, the carbohydrate-insulin connection, and demystifies terms like "ketosis" and "glycemic index." Woodruff's approach is more vegetarian-friendly and holistic than Atkins or Arthur Agastston's South Beach Diet. Unfortunately, after the introductory chapters, the pages quickly begin to fill with skim-only material, such as charts showing the calorie count of various low-carb foods, a "Good-Carb Life Plan Pyramid," and banal, beauty magazine weight-loss hints like "get plenty of rest," "exercise for an hour a day," and, of course, when dining out "pass up the bread basket." The book's second half is devoted to uninspired low-carb recipes: Portobello Pizzas, Chicken-Pesto Quesadillas and Microwave Egg Scramble. (June 7) Forecast: Although Woodruff does offer an alternative to the two giants of low-carb eating (Atkins and South Beach), she is joining a very crowded marketplace. Total Health Care Partners published Beyond Atkins earlier this year, and Sterling will bring out Living the Low Carb Life in May. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
